How Many Cloth Diapers Do I Need?
Types of Cloth Diapers  by

New to Cloth Diapers?

Cloth diaper world can be overwhelming with so many diapers to choose from. Basically, cloth diapers fall into mainly 6 categories: flats, prefolds, contours, fitted, pockets and all in ones and hybrids and they are either made from synthetic or natural fiber. Examples natural fibers are cotton, hemp, bamboo, wool and synthetic fibers are micro fleece and micro suede. Here is a basic overview of the cloth diapering system to help you get started.

Flats
Flat diapers are the old fashion diapers that most people are use to. The diapers are made of a single layer of cotton, normally gauze, and are rectangular in shape and must be folded to fit your baby. Flat diapers must be fastened with a diaper pin or snappi and require a water proof cover. Flat diapers are the least absorbent of the all the diapers. Many people use them as a burp cloth or as a doubler for other diapering system.

Pre-fold
Pre-fold diapers are similar to flat diapers however, the diaper is sewn into 3 sections. Each section has multiple layers with the most layer in the middle section where the absorbency is needed the most. A number system is used to describe the numbers of layers in each section for example a 4x8x4 ply means that the outer sections have 4 layers of cotton and the middle has 8 layers of cotton. Pre-fold diapers must be folded like a diaper to fit your baby and require a water proof cover and a diaper fastener. They are the most absorbent, durable and the best economical choice. The cotton may be bleached to removed natural oil found in the plant or can be left natural.

Contour
Contour diapers are pre-shaped diapers that look similar to an hour glass however, they have no elastic in the waist or legs. Contour diapers require a fastener such as a diaper pin or snappi and a water proof diaper cover. They are more expensive than prefolds and flats however, easier to use since they do not require shaping. They may not contain blow out as well as prefolds and flat.

Fitted
Fitted diapers are shaped like disposable diapers. They have elastic in the waist and the legs and does not require a diaper pin or snappi fastener however, they still require a water proof diaper cover. They are the easiest to use and contain blow out well.

Pocket
Pocket diapers have a 2 part system, the diaper and the insert. The diaper outer layer has a water proof backing, the inside is lined with a layer of fleece and there is an opening in the back so you can put the absorbent insert in. One down side is, diaper cannot work without the insert and depending on the type of insert used, diaper could be very bulky.
All in Ones
They are the cloth version of disposable diapers. They have all the elements of a diapering system sewn into one. The diaper is fastened using either aplix or snaps. Because the soaker is built into the diaper, all in ones take longer to dry. All in one diapers are the most expensive diapering choice. However, they are an excellent choice for spouses, daycare, grandparents, and for anyone new to cloth diapering.
Hyrid Diapers

These diapers are like an all in one diaper but the inserts are removeable. The diaper has a re-usable waterproof outer shell and the inserts are removed when they become soiled and replaced with a new one.

How to Wash New Prefolds and Other Natural Fiber Diapers  by
How To Wash New Cloth Diapers
Be sure to wash all new diapers and diaper covers in hot/warm water respectively prior to using.
Cotton and bamboo diapers need to be washed at least 6-8 times before they become fully absorbent.
New prefold diapers are not fluffy and soft as used prefolds, but are thin and stiff. They need to be washed and dried in hot water several times before using in order to make them fluffy and soft. Bleached prefolds should be washed at 2-3 times in hot water with 1/4- to 1/2 the amount of the detergent recommended for a given load. Natural prefolds still contain wax and oils from the plant and therefore needs to be washed and dried 4-5 times on the hottest water possible. Use 1/2 the amount of detergent recommended for your load. You can adjust your water heater temperature to the highest heat setting to ensure your water will be hot however, please remember to reset the water temperature immediately after washing to prevent burning. Diapers will become more fluffy, soft and absorbent with repeated washing.

How to wash and store dirty diapers  by

How to Store Soiled Diapers?

There is no need to store dirty diapers in a bucket of water. Stagnant water becomes smelly, harbors bacteria and presents a drowning hazard for infants and toddlers. Store soiled diapers in a diaper pail/laundry basket lined with a pail liner. For babies eating solids, shake poop out of the diaper or rinse off poop with a Bumgenius Diaper Sprayer before adding to other soiled diapers. Breastfed babies poop diaper does not need to be rinse prior to washing. To control smell, allow air to circulate throughout diaper pail, add a Rockin Green Shake It Up Pail Freshner to diaper pail and wash within 2-3 days.

Washing Instructions
Cold Rinse- remove diaper pail liner with diapers and add to wash machine. Do a cold rinse to get all the exess solids or urine out
Hot wash- wash diapers in hot water with 1/2 the detergent recommended or if using a natural detergent add 1-2 Tbsp of detergent.
Rinse- rinse diapers in cold water, occasionally you can add a cup of vinegar or tea tree oil to the rinse to help kill bacteria and soften up diapers.

2nd rinse- optional- rinse diapers in cold. 2nd rinse is needed if too much detergent was used to prevent irritation to the baby's skin.

Drying- dry diapers on hot setting to further kill germs or line dry the diapers. Air dry diaper covers to extend their life.

AVOID using bleach, softeners, detergents with fragrances, perfumes, dyes, brighteners and enzymes on your diaper products as they will destroy your diapers and are also skin irritant for babies.

How Many Cloth Diapers Do I Need?  by

How many diaper do I need?

The number of diapers you will need to get started depends on the age of your child and on how often you are planning on washing.

Newborns require the most diapers since they eliminate each time they are fed. Most newborns will eat about every 1 1/2 to 2 hours so you are looking at 12 diapers a day.

0-6 months

If you plan on washing every day, a safe number is 18 diapers so you will have a few while the others are in the wash. Every other day, you will need about 24 diapers and every 2 days about 36 diapers.

6- 12 months

12 diapers will get you through a day, 20 diapers every other day and 24 every 2 days

12-24 months

Most toddlers will use about 8 diapers a day and one diaper for overnight. 12 diapers will enable you to wash every other day and 18 every 2 days. Most toddler will also begin potty training around this time so you may find that you require even less diapers.

Potty Training

You will need about 4-8 diapers depending on how advance you little one is in the potty training stage.

What is the best diapers for newborns?

Because newborns go through so many diapers and outgrow the newborn stage very quickly, a lot of moms choose prefolds diapers as their main diapers and then add a few other styles such as aios or fitteds to their diapers stash.

What else do I need?

Diaper Pail

You will need to store soiled diapers in a pail which you can get a local store such as Target in the laundry section.

Pail liner

Pail liner makes laundry days much easier and keep you hands mess free. On wash day, remove the pail liner with the soiled diapers, empty the soiled diapers along with the liner in the washing machine then proceed with your wash routine.

Cloth Wipes

Cloth wipes just makes sense once you are cloth diapers. No chemicals on your wipes and saves so much money. No need to separate diapers from wipes just add everything in the wash. You will need about 2-3 cloth wipes.

Wet Bag

Wet bags are a great and convenient way to travel with your cloth diapers.
